Tony completed a PhD in biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Queensland in 1998. After gaining his PhD, he was awarded an Imperial Cancer Research Fund postdoctoral fellowship and held a joint appointment in the Breast Cancer biology and protein structure and function groups until being appointed a lecturer in the department of Cardiological Sciences, St Georges Hospital Medical School, London, UK.

Tony remained there until taking up a senior research fellowship at University College London in 2004. His research into the mechanisms of cardiac disease was supported by grants from the Heart Failure Foundation (UK), British Heart Foundation and the Wellcome trust. Tony was elected to the Royal Society of Medicine in 2004.

Tony has published widely in peer reviewed articles in journals including Circulation,
The Lancet, Molecular Cell, EMBO Journal, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Biology, Journal of the American College of Cardiologists and Microbiology.
