Kwan’s s technical areas of expertise are semiconductor devices, photonics and nanotechnology. After completing a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) at the University of Sydney, Kwan commenced postgraduate studies at the University of New South Wales. After being awarded the University College Old Members Scholarship to undertake a DPhil at the University of Oxford, the research project was completed for the Master of Engineering (Research) degree.
Kwan was awarded the DPhil from the University of Oxford in 2007. The area of research involved fabrication, spectroscopy and computational modelling of III-V nanostructures for photonic device applications. During the DPhil, Kwan was a Visiting Researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Following the completion of the DPhil, Kwan worked at Samsung Electronics as a Research Engineer - involved in research to improve the electrical stability of amorphous silicon thin film transistors.
