Principal, Chemical/Life Sciences Team John McCann practises in the area of chemical, electrochemical, biochemical and physical chemistry patents. John has research experience across the fields of chemistry, electrochemistry, physics, solar cells and battery technology and lasers. John holds a PhD from Flinders University and has completed a course in quantum chemistry and solid state physics at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. Prior to joining SPRUSON & FERGUSON in 1982, John worked as a research and development chemist at Abbott Laboratories, before undertaking three years postdoctoral experience in electrochemistry, solid state physics and solar cells as a research associate with the University of New South Wales’ Physics Department. John became a principal of Spruson & Ferguson in 1988. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and has published several articles in scientific journals, as well as chapters of scientific books. He is a founding contributing author of the patent law chapter in Halsbury’s Laws of Australia and co-author of the Biotechnology IP Management Manual commissioned by the Australian government agency, Biotechnology Australia. John is a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was an examiner in patent law in the examinations for registration as a patent attorney for five years.
