John Brass practises predominantly in the areas of electronic and electrical engineering, computer science, medical devices and business methods. His particular areas of specialty include: computer systems, digital and analogue electronics, digital signal processing, RFID, software engineering, embedded systems, control systems, numerical control, telecommunications, radio communications, cryptographic systems, forward error correction systems, parking control systems, traffic control systems, access control systems and business methods.

John had more than 12 years experience in industry prior to joining the patent profession. His career began in defence electronics, designing secure tactical communications equipment. Thereafter, he was appointed Chief Engineer of a South African based company that is internationally known for its access and traffic control products. During this period, John gained broad technical marketing experience from supporting an extensive international distribution network. He subsequently established a new R&D laboratory and high-tech electronics manufacturing facility in
South Africa for a German investor.

John served as an external examiner of final year design theses in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Natal in South Africa and has lectured Patent Systems in the Master of Industrial Property course at the University of Technology in Sydney. He joined the firm’s electrical group in 1999 and has been a Principal of Spruson & Ferguson since 2003.
