David Miles completed a PhD in virology and molecular biology at the University of New South Wales in 2003. Before obtaining a PhD, David obtained a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences at Mississippi State University and a Master of Science in microbiology, immunology, and parasitology at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans.

David has worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in the area of neurobiology. His research encompassed the genetic engineering of recombinant viruses for viral gene therapy in neurodegenerative mouse models. In a second postdoctoral position, David worked in the area of infectious diseases in the Prince of Wales Hospital and UNSW Research Laboratories at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

David enjoys teaching and has lectured at the School of Optometry at UNSW in relation to microbial eye diseases for the past four years. He has also maintained two appointments as an adjunct lecturer with the Faculty of Medicine, School of Medical Sciences and the School of Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences at UNSW. David has spoken numerous times at international conferences as an invited speaker and published numerous papers in high impact journals.

At Spruson & Ferguson, David is applying his academic knowledge and experience in the areas of molecular biology, microbiology (virology in particular), immunology, and biochemistry to all aspects of patent work including patent creation, patent prosecution, and maintaining patent portfolios. He is currently studying for his qualification as a registered patent attorney and is a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand and a member of the Australian Society for Microbiology.
