Annette Freeman has extensive experience in the area of trade mark law and manages several substantial portfolios of marks for both Australian and overseas clients. Annette provides advice in areas such as the protection of trade marks in Australia and overseas, trade mark searching and correct usage and maintenance of trade marks. She is also an experienced advocate in oppositions and other actions before the Registrar of Trade Marks.

Annette joined Spruson & Ferguson in 1979, was admitted to the New South Wales bar in 1980 and admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1991. She also holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property, and is a Notary Public. Annette acted as the Chair of the Parallel Imports Committee for 2006–2007 which forms part of the Policy and Development Advocacy Executive of the International Trademarks Association (INTA).

She is the author of several articles and publications on trade mark law including the Australian chapter in Famous and Well-Known Marks edited by Frederick Mostert and published by INTA. Annette has served on several committees of INTA and presently serves on the Board of Directors of INTA. She is presently co-authoring the fourth edition of Shanahan on Trademarks, the seminal text on Australian trade mark law. Annette established the course and lectured for several years in Trade Marks Practice in the post-graduate faculty at the University of Technology, Sydney. Annette also served on the Australian Government Patent Attorney Professional Standards Board 2005 – 2007.
